Avoidance as defence
Felix Butterwick
I would like to think that this collection of works seems to reach upward, the paintings look to climb the wall. All the works centre themselves around the ways in which we conceal: ourselves, our thoughts, objects, and presence. I’m looking to inspect how in the obscuring of an object something entirely new is born, an apparition of sorts. Destruction as creation, redaction as addition.
The works surrounding you look to embrace painting tropes of the past, entering in and gyrating around histories of the medium. These paintings are juxtaposed with experiments with language, attempting to probe lingual theories and how we comprehend written word. I tried to imagine these works as framed within a timeline, sticking awkwardly out. Their hidden natures making them often impermeable or reflective, never wholly belong to the viewer. It is a fiddly ordeal, really.
