Iris Nicholson (she/her)

As a photographer, I am interested in documenting details within environments that are often overlooked, whether that’s through observational street walks or more personal subject matter. This year I have mainly explored domestic spaces and the emotional attachments to objects found there.

Mave

This project ‘Mave’ is about my Nana and her home in the Welsh countryside. It explores family relationships, loss and memories. The project began by documenting Mavis in her home in the last years of her life and has continued since she passed. These photographs depict everyday reminders of my Nana, alongside the objects and intimate arrangements that were left in her home. They uphold tangible elements of the past such as archival family photos, and household ornaments. Within these artifacts, traces of life and the fragility of time becomes apparent. This work champions our lasting memories of people, places and everything that is left behind.

Small World

This work is part of an ongoing observational project focusing on details within Glasgow, exploring liminal spaces which are often overlooked, showcasing the seemingly mundane yet playful interventions within these environments. I worked speculatively allowing my observations through walking to guide and inform the outcomes, as evident through the found title of the project, taken from a street sign.

Through this documentation of details in the city such as discarded objects, texture and light I aim to highlight these subtle traces within their environmental context. In addition to more humorous, light hearted observations which have a performative nature such as peoples garden displays and street signage.
