Jiashan Li (she/her)
As an artist who originates from China but has immersed myself in Western countries, I have embarked on a transformative journey that blends the rich tapestry of my cultural heritage with the artistic influences and techniques I have acquired during my years of studying Western art which forms the foundation of my artistic practice.
My deep connection to Chinese culture, art, music, and the profound influence of Chinese traditional landscape paintings have left an indelible mark on my creative expression. Through a contemporary lens, I endeavor to recreate these timeless landscapes, infusing them with my personal experiences and observations. By reimagining them in my own language, I aim to capture the essence of Chinese art while simultaneously exploring the boundaries of its form.
Central to my artistic process is the profound influence of Buddhism, a spiritual practice that has shaped my worldview and artistic sensibilities. I draw inspiration from the philosophy of Buddhism, delving into its profound teachings and seeking to translate its wisdom through visual narratives. In doing so, I strive to create art that not only resonates with the viewer’s emotions but also encourages introspection and contemplation.
Working primarily with oil and mixed media paintings, I engage in a deliberate dialogue between materials, technique, and subject matter. The tactile qualities of oil paint allow me to convey a sense of depth, texture, and luminosity, enabling the viewer to experience the layers of cultural heritage and personal narrative within each piece. Through the integration of mixed media, I embrace experimentation and the fusion of Eastern and Western elements, fostering a dialogue between contrasting cultural identities.
My art reflects the inherent clash of cultures that I have experienced, but it is also a celebration of the harmonious coexistence and mutual inspiration that can emerge from this clash. By synthesizing my diverse cultural influences, I aim to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western artistic traditions.
In essence, my work serves as a visual translation of Chinese art, transcending geographical boundaries and cultural barriers. Through a fusion of Eastern-Western mindset, I endeavor to create art that speaks to my personal journey.
Buddha (Series)
The series “Buddha” embodies the essence of Buddhism, Thangka paintings, and the transformative power of art. As an artist, I am deeply influenced by the profound wisdom and spirituality of Buddhism, which serves as the guiding light for this body of work.
Drawing inspiration from the intricate and sacred Thangka tradition, I employ the medium of oil and mixed media to create mesmerizing compositions that bridge the gap between the East and the West. The fixed-proportion lines, integral to Thangka art, serve as a foundational element in my work, honoring the rich history and aesthetics of this ancient tradition while infusing it with a contemporary flair.
Through this series, I strive to express my understanding of Buddhism’s philosophy and its universal teachings of compassion, mindfulness, and enlightenment. Each piece is a visual exploration, where vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and symbolic imagery converge to invite contemplation and reflection.
By merging Eastern and Western artistic elements, I aim to create a harmonious fusion that transcends cultural boundaries, offering viewers a fresh perspective and an opportunity for cross-cultural dialogue. “Buddha” invites you on a transformative journey, where tradition meets innovation, spirituality meets artistry, and the profound teachings of Buddhism find expression in a visually captivating and thought-provoking manner.
