Joanne Murray (She/Her)

My work explores the remainder, the leftover marks, traces, echoes. I am always trying to capture the evidence of something that took place, of a person that is no longer there, capturing gestural movements and exploring what sort of proof those gestures leave for us. I have long been immensely intrigued by folds and creases, the evidence leftover from action. whether in the act of making them intentionally for a resolved piece of artwork or the folds themselves being an aftermath of something else entirely. My work aims to explore something lingering, a consequence, a remainder of something having happened and then viewing the proof of it. Whether that is the creases on a bedsheet, marks of charcoal on paper or even a blank piece of paper manipulated by being folded up in your pocket. The common thread that ties them together is that they are these marks are the enduring trace of whatever experience carved them out, and are entwined with memory of an action.
