Ross’ First Cocktail
Alcohol, Swearing
The tale of the first cocktail my partner made in his first Glasgow bar job, black ink and water on glass.
Through frames hand painted onto glass over a light box, this short animated film Ross tells the story of the first cocktail he made in Glasgow, and a story everyone who has worked a shift in hospitality will relate to. This was my first time animating anything over a few seconds and I wanted to challenge myself and learn as much as I could in my remaining weeks.
I made and brought sketchbooks along to the cocktail bar Ross was currently working at to study him in action as well as the bar itself. While I was waiting for him and his colleges to finish closing up I would sketch tables, bottles and interesting parts of the interiors. I combined these sketchbooks with photos to produce more detailed ink paintings, which led to animatics and more experiments before a final film draft.
Ross helped me create and record all sound effects in our flat using our home bar, he also tells the story in his own words after a few drinks. I hope this captures what a hard worker he is and the incredible service standard he brings to all jobs and other aspects in life.
Full animation and all tests on YouTube, extra work on Instagram.
