Kyubean Nam (She/her)
I use my practice as a way of recording of my time, place and journey, using experience, data, maps and photos from my present environment and surroundings, translating them into procedural and intuitive works in various visual forms of hand-woven weavings, paintings, prints, drawings and installation. My practice has been largely influenced by the weaving medium and learning about its relationship with binary. My research has led me to use binary and hex code from ASCII to generate works, colour palettes and find alternate binary systems and languages to incorporate in my work. My other influences are mostly from my interest in colour and in the process of making.
Working in the weaving mediums for a few years has constantly reminded me of the time-consuming labour, which has recently led me to focus on time and duration. My paintings are captured moments of time in my making process.
P+P Binary and Hex Register, Class of 2023
A Hand woven coded Tapestry made up of the first names of 4th year students on the Painting and Printmaking course at GSA, in alphabetical order.
Everyone’s names are converted into binary, each presented by 2 colours – the colour palette is sourced from converting the first 3 letters of everyone’s name into hex codes, which generates the corresponding colour each name is woven in.
Students who go by the same name, have their surname initial in capitals at the end.
This tapestry was made to finish my series from last year, recording my flat hunting situation, my journey, location and finally getting to my final year at GSA.
