My artistic practice derives from my appreciation of the captivating interplay between contrasting materials and the surrounding environment. The collection, “For The Love Of Concrete,” is a homage to brutalist architecture, encompassing both wearable and sculptural objects. Within my work, I use photography as a primary tool for exploration, allowing me to visually dissect construction techniques of brutalist buildings in Glasgow and the North of England. Through analysis of my images, I have transformed the characteristics of these buildings into pieces of hand-held architecture.
In my work, I explore the combination of precious metals with materials sourced from the urban environment, creating a compelling juxtaposition that fosters a deeper understanding of materiality. Employing techniques such as scoring and folding, I am able to create sharp lines and geometric forms, inviting viewers to engage with the interplay of shapes and surface textures. Each piece comprises modular components, mirroring the external structure of buildings and evoking a sense of architectural significance.
My collection, For The Love Of Concrete, is designed to reinforce and appreciate the individual craft of mid-century architects and celebrate the power of brutalism.
