Mira Knoche (she/her)

Mira Knoche’s paintings, sculptures, events, and writing explore a curiosity in people, bodies, power, class, gender and community. She investigates material qualities and stories, female gazes onto the world, through abstract and figurative art.
Her current research practice is focused around reinventing mythologies, reconsidering canonical historical art and popular imagery from an intersectional perspective, sometimes with theatrical curiosity delving into the grotesque. She aims to both revive archetypal, culturally ingrained imagery as well as obliquely shift and question inherent representations of perceived realities, such as gendered conditioning and perception.

Her series in painting and sculpture, ‘Sisyphus as Woman’ (2021) marked the start of this project. She furthered her research practice during a scholarship-funded residency at the New York Academy of Art (2022), resulting in sculptures and developed with the painting ‘Medusa muses…’, the Gorgon as pondering current challenges. She has since developed this theme in sculpture, sound art and painting for her degree show at the Glasgow School of Art.

Taking a deeper-time perspective, with a mythological lens, the intention is to build a bridge between contemporary questions and ancestral roots as well as the environment, through reconsidering art historical traditions, posing questions around social justice and investigating a sense of community – enchanting and disrupting.

Mira managed a punk band for a while, and in 2019 founded womxn-led WENCH collective who organise art & music events. She has written on art for Bella Caledonia and more. In 2019 she had a solo exhibition at Edinburgh Central Art & Design Library and has shown paintings and installations as part of numerous group shows at Salt Space Gallery in Glasgow (2020, 2021, and 2022), Pier Arts Centre (2022), The Life Room (Edinburgh, 2022), New York Academy of Art (2022) and beyond.

She has recently graduated from the Glasgow School of Art and now works from the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and her studio in Leith.
