Poppy Fraser (she/her)
Poppy Fraser is a Bristol-born artist currently studying Fine Art: Painting and Printmaking, in her final year at the Glasgow School of Art. Her intentions, through her creative practice, are to make the viewer look more closely at figures occupying space.
Poppy is a multidisciplinary artist. The use of photographs is the main starting point to her work, whether in the form of found images, family photo albums or photographs she’s taken on her 35mm camera, all of which capture a moment in time. These then inform her output in a variety of different mediums and scales including printmaking, drawing and painting. Using these mediums, she explores themes of feminism, family, memory, time, roots and nostalgia.
Selected Works 2023
Inspiration for this body of work has come from found family photographs of my maternal Grandma and her sisters, travelling in Austria. I was particularly interested in the vibrancy and the composition of the photographs and the stories that were captured in the images. My work explores memories of women I hardly knew, restoring, and bringing them into the present day. I’ve paired and contrasted these old photographs with the present day and my first-hand experiences of exploring the Scottish landscape with my female friends. The range of mediums used allows me to convey something unique and different with each piece of work. I’ve used painting and printmaking to rework and create vibrant and inviting scenes for the viewer to be transported into.
