Stefan Mocanu
This array of works, part of the narrative and speculative collection entitled “Hidden Knowledge” , represents my rendition of how an extraterrestrial civilization would try to share their knowledge with the universe, an idea originating from our own species’ trial of reaching far into the galaxy with information about ourselves in hopes of it being intercepted by another intelligent lifeform:
The “Golden Record” which is inscribed with information about who we are, where and how our world sounds like, is held on the Voyager I Probe, having now already reached interstellar space.
The species that I’ve created as a platform to grow and expand my creative enquiry has been given the name of the Light Weavers (Textores Lucis), an inter-dimensionary species which utilizes light in order to create, convey and store information into light interactive materials. The shapes and forms are derived from various structures of life contained within geometric shapes, from which borders complexity starts to occur, akin to the the play of entropy and enthalpy in our universe, of chaos and yet, order, As I embarked on a journey to build artefacts for an entire specie, I had to draw inspiration from a plethora of sources, from human made space object and otherworldly scenery by Peter Mohrbacher and Stefan Celic to video game world building and character design, architectural geometric tiles as well as various ways in how space travel can manipulate matter,
As for the materials used, I have chosen multicolour biodegradable polymers created through 3D printing as well as an array of pressformed copper, silver and titanium, all of which have been selected for their captivating visual properties, which create illusions of depth, colour and texture through minute interactions with the physical properties of light.
The artefacts can be standalone decorative as well as wearable pieces, scalable to almost any desired size in any of the models present, attached to the body with fixed fittings or customizable ones to allow the user to engage freely and creatively, to tell a new story using various metal and biodegradable materials, tailored to each person’s individual vision. .I have chosen to collect some pieces into already combined forms, and some have been left uncombined, in order to benefit different display scenarios, allow each individual model to be seen fully, and offer the ability to be customized by addressing how it can best represent the wearer through combination of size, colour, fittings and finish.
Through my work, I seek to merge art, science, and technology and by utilizing processes such as rapid-prototyping, press forming, and structural colour through patina, I strive to push the boundaries of what can be achieved from the convergence of these fields. One of the first perceivable elements of my work is the use of heat, solution or electrical patina as an entropic effect, a visual representation of the universe’s inevitable march towards chaos and disorder, realized through an oxymoronically controlled oxidation of the metal, which manipulates light itself to reflect specific colours depending on the thickness of the oxide layer.
Via the use of various materials and techniques which bend and manipulate light, I aim to capture the viewer’s attention, inviting a sense of awe and even slight doubt as to the reality of these pieces. The works’ sense of uncanny familiarity, geometry turned organic, Earthly but not quite, brings forward a universal quality of life, nudging at our sense of individuality on this blue dot. In hopes of offering new insight, this collection invites its audience to push past what was thought to be achievable, and reach beyond into the unknown
